Confed
So, a Conservative senator (who is also an heiress and a lesbian) said today that aid groups (like the one I work for!) need to "Shut the fuck up about abortion".

The backstory here is that when Stephen Harper announced that maternal health was going to be the focus to this year's G8/G20 meetings in Toronto, Michael Ignatieff pro-actively said that access to abortion had better be part of that agenda. I fully cop to being excited at the time. The Leader of the Official Opposition being pro-actively pro-choice? Awesome!

But what I've been hearing from folks in the loop is that he did this largely without consultation with groups who are providing these services. And that the status quo about funding for abortion/contraception was basically don't-ask-don't-tell, which is apologist bullshit for sure, but it was also the best we were going to get with this government. It was an issue that was off of the radar. What Ignatieff did was shine a spotlight on this stuff and put a lot of groups funding in jeopardy. Which literally puts the lives of majority world women in jeopardy.

Fucking things up even further, the Liberals then put forward a motion to include access to abortion in the range of maternal health options being presented by Canada at this year's summit. It was defeated by members of their own party. Can you effing believe the ineptitude of this man? Me either.

So Harper -- ever a brilliant tactician -- realizing that Ignatieff actually can't do anything right, has picked up the gauntlet that Ignatieff haphazardly chucked at the ground, and said that access to abortion won't be part of this initiative. (Contraception is, thank god). He can now say that it's the will of Parliament to have things be this way.

This is terrible. And I don't think it would have happened without Iggy's attempt to use majority world women's health for his own personal gain. That isn't to say that I think he's not pro-choice or anything, I'm sure he is. It's just that he really didn't talk to anyone he is purportedly going to bat for, before stirring all this shit up.

But now it's stirred up. And Nancy Ruth is telling everyone to shut the fuck up about it. Which is advice that is at once pragmatic, and chilling. Because as many people have pointed out, it's rarely to the benefit of oppressed groups for them to shut the fuck up. At the same time, I can't help but find myself agreeing with a colleague who I was emailing with today about this stuff:

Sen. Nancy Ruth has a foul mouth, that's for sure. But she's not wrong. Canadian women could conceivably (harhar!) lose the right to abortion if this is turned into an election issue. And no one wants to see that happen.

So I don't know. I guess this one of those times where it's hard to figure out how to handle something strategically, and how much our shutting the fuck up would be in the best interests of people we're trying to support. And what sort of long-term peril we're putting ourselves in for doing so, versus what sort of long-term peril we're putting ourselves in by not doing so.

I only saw the title when I clicked through, so I was going to say something about the late-period Das EFX song that that Tricky sample comes from ("Dedicated," off Hold It Down), but this is more serious than that, so I won't.

THANK YOU for the run-down. I usually have no trouble making sense of Canadian news from afar, but this story has been surprisingly difficult to follow/piece together from a news aggregator alone.

That is fucking terrifying. Seriously. I don't think I want to live in a country where abortion is illegal.

Is there actually a right to abortion in Canada? I thought it was legal by virtue of the fact that there weren't actually any laws on the books about it. Has it ever been ruled as a right?

Which is pretty ironic and necessary and sad, when you think about it.

Iggy and his talk
Hi Audra.

Sadly, I happen to know that Iggy *did* talk with a development group who basically fed him the lines he used when he spoke up in the first place. Sadly, it appears that the strategy- Iggy's and the group's - was wrong. However, not sure they could have predicted what was to ultimately happen.

Bullies often win and Harper is the biggest bully on the playground that is Parliament.

You, however, rock.

Re: Iggy and his talk
... Iggy does know that he has anti-choice zealots in his caucus. How they'd react to a non-whipped vote on Rae's bill didn't take any imagination.

Why play a game of chicken when your own head is already cut off?

The organization I work for, AWID, was the 'host' of this event (Joanna Kerr being our former ED, and thus friends with my boss, Lydia Alpizar, who spoke at the event) so I was actually the one sending out the invitations to this and sat in on the organizing committee call.

This needs to become an election issue, because it's one of the few things that will cause millions of Canadians to get off their fat, complacent asses and scream.

We cannot let ourselves be cowed into shutting the fuck up on the offchance that Harper will be slightly less terribly unpleasant. If we're not allowed to voice our concerns to our elected representatives for fear of reprisals, exactly what the fuck are they doing in office?

Is this the "mandate" Harper insists he has, and which the Canadian media is complicit in supporting by the very fact that they never, ever question the use of the word to describe the fraction of voters who support a minority government?

demographic diversity
A woman, a lesbian, and a conversative. Lefties everywhere must be confused how they feel about that one. I just wanted to point out how nice it is to see such a demographically diverse group of people give their opinions on this subject. The only problem is, I can't in good conscience do that, because when I take a quick look at the people responding to this story, with a very few exceptions, it is infact a very demographically similar group without much diversity at all. Seems to me like this is just one narrow opinion. I suppose thats really the purpose of these online political blogs. Only people whose perspective is similar to yours have an interest in continually reading your articles. Anybody with a moderate comprehension of the English language can write their opinion and get all the affirmation they need. Please note, I'm not actually agreeing or disagreeing with anything in the article. Just for the record, I'm neither pro-life nor pro-choice. I just think it would be nice to see a more diverse audience respond to this, but hey, that isn't the authors fault. We don't get to chose who reads and who responds to the things we write.

I really dislike Ignatieff for his constant political errors and I also don't believe the majority of voting Canadians are pro-life. I am certainly concerned about the cuts to funding to women's health and well being programs.
